CHAPTER 2A Change in Direction
The moment I saw my granddaughter for the first time, I made a promise to her, myself, and the universe. This child would never look at me with fear in her eyes. I had used aggression and intimidation as a tool to address my fears of social situations and unwanted attention. All the walls I had built up between myself and the world around me crumbled before the gaze of this innocent child. For the first time in my life, I had to take a hard look at my life choices, and I was ashamed of what I had become. For being a genius, I had made all the wrong choices for far too long.
It's not every day that a hacker and a biker decides to change his alignment; for me, it was so much more than just deciding not to attack computers or access controls. This needed to be a complete change in lifestyle, choices, direction, and actions. The issue was that I couldn't just turn off decades of behavior, skepticism, and distrust. The temptation of that next challenge was always there in the back of my mind. I noticed that I couldn't stop sizing up rooms every time I walked into them. Where were the closed-circuit TV (CCTV) cameras? Where were the exits? Were there any electronics in the public area? Were there any open ports? I couldn't stop seeing all the opportunities I was no longer willing to take.
