2Build the Best Teams, Period

Why do we hire people? Because we need help, ideas, skills, and support to build and grow. But what if we take a step back from the nitty-gritty of the hiring process—a grueling operation that's laden with bias, privilege, secret handshakes, and unfair treatment—and focus on the larger purpose of hiring? As you approach this work, your first thought shouldn't be: “I need to get more Black and Brown people on our team.” It should be, “I want to create the most successful team ever.” And what does success look like? To me, it's a team that is reflective and representative of our country at large where nobody is excluded because of their differences.

You can design and implement the most inclusive hiring practices. Still, if your managers are unwilling to champion DEI across the business, you will struggle to attract and retain diverse talent. Reactive hiring practices aren't sustainable. Telling people they “have to hire a Black person” doesn't work because that language focuses on a binary, quantitative measurement of success, which only produces short-term, non-inclusive results—they follow the script once and believe their work is done. This hire is labeled a diversity hire, is automatically laden with low expectations, and is thus doomed from the start. The working biases and assumptions of the company have not been discussed openly, and so this Black hire has been set up to fail.
