4Make Better Hiring Decisions

We are often overworked, and when there’s an open headcount the natural inclination is to fill it fast. I call this “the house is on fire” mentality. The minute someone quits, your instinct is to put out that fire by filling that seat. Who could possibly make a good decision under those circumstances? More help may lessen the load on your existing team members, but it’s a short-term goal with temporary benefits. You rationalize yourself into shortcut decisions to lessen your teams’ burdens. You recycle the old job description and follow the same patterns of recruitment that led you to your last hire. But here’s the major flaw, you did not center on equity and inclusion with that hire, and you haven’t yet with this one. Instead, pause and reflect on what core values and skills you need in all hires, what this new hire can contribute to your team’s strategic growth and cultural transformation efforts, and how much wider a net you need to cast to ensure you have a diverse selection of talent from which to choose. Consider all the possibilities.

If I had a magic wand, I would slow down the hiring process. Rushing shuts down creativity in sourcing, pushes forth “safe” candidates, and, most damaging, increases bad hires. When I’ve pushed back on hiring managers’ final candidate selections, sometimes they plead, “Just this once; I don’t have time to interview for more diverse talent,” or they simply respond, “Let’s just hire him; he’s ‘a good fit,’” or ...
