10.8 Glossary
AES. The Advanced Encryption Standard, a NIST standard designed to take
the place of DES.
Equivalent Inverse Cipher. An inver se (deciphering) scheme for Rijndael
that has exactly the same scheme as encry ptio n.
Layer. Any of the four processes: MixColumn, AddRoundKey, SubBytes and
ShiftRow that form Rijndael.
Nybble. (Or “Nibble.”) A four-bit block used in simplified Rijndael.
Rijndael. The Belgian cipher chosen by NIST to be the AES.
