In our look at the various types of equipment in the uplink, we need to give an idea of the sizes of the units. Equipment is typically not in stand-alone cases, but designed to be screwed into equipment racks or bays.
There is an internationally recognized way of measuring the height and width of equipment – the Rack Unit (RU). The rack width is defined as 19 inches (and hence ‘half rack’ width is, as it suggests, 9% inches wide), and 1 RU is equal to 1.75 inches (44.5 mm) high (incidentally there is no standard for the depth of equipment).
