It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Chapter 6. Mobile Core Evolution
The role of access networks, as described in Chapters 2 and 3, is to provide simple connectivity to the core network—whether this is a Circuit-Switched Core Network (originally called the Network-Switching Subsystem by GSM) or a Packet-Switched Core Network.
As its name suggests, the Circuit-Switched Core Network provides access to Circuit-Switched (CS) services, including voice, SMS, and CS data. The Circuit-Switched Core is defined for legacy cellular systems, including GSM Edge Radio Access Network (GERAN), UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN), and the cdma2000 1xRTT Radio Access Network.
