This plugin ensures default storage classes can work as expected if no StorageClass is set in a PersistentVolumeClaim. Different provisioning tools with different cloud providers will leverage DefaultStorageClass (such as GKE, which uses Google Cloud Persistent Disk). Ensure you have this enabled.
