The leaders-as-teachers approach used by BD University is one example of how leadership development can be done in a systematic way in an organization. But it's just the beginning, and the momentum needs to be maintained. Institutionalizing major organizational change takes time. Great progress toward embedding the leader-as-teacher practices has been made since BD University began. But the company probably needs another two to three years to permanently change its genetic code with regard to teaching and learning. It's as though the university is an army that has made it onto the beach and gone about five miles inland but needs to advance another fifteen miles to fully establish itself.
