Chapter 5Leading with Empathy

You do not need to have a leadership title to lead with empathy.

Your actions to improve human quality of life in adverse times makes you a leader.

Start Your Leadership Journey with Emotional Intelligence

Undoubtedly, leadership has been one of the most frequently tested skills during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is effortless to read articles on a leader's behavior during COVID-19 and what they should do and didn't. But in reality, it is a whole different ballgame and requires consistent work and practice.

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a critical part of behavioral shift essential for powerful empathic leadership. Emotional intelligence sets high performers apart from others having the same technical skills and knowledge. EQ is the ability that refers to the perception, control, and evaluation of emotions. Some researchers claim that emotional intelligence is an inborn characteristic, while others think that you can learn and strengthen it with time.

It is essential to have the ability to express and control your emotions. At the same time, it is vital to know the correct way of understanding, responding, and interpreting others' feelings. Rather than traditional cognitive abilities, EQ provides increased value to a leader's character, achievements, happiness, and success. Leaders with a high EQ have a higher sphere of influence and more considerable followers.

The next sections include suggestions for leaders to increase their EQ.
