Colophon

The animal on the cover of Learning PHP Design Patterns is an Alaska plaice (Pleuronectes quadrituberculatus). The Alaska plaice is a saltwater fish that lives primarily in the Pacific Ocean, from the Gulf of Alaska in the east to the Chukchi Sea in the north and the Sea of Japan in the west. The plaice can be found up to 600 meters deep, down on the bottom of the continental shelf. The plaice is a flatfish, meaning it has an eyed side and a blind side, which faces the ocean floor. These particular flatfish can grow up to 24 inches long with five to seven small bony cones on its eyed side.

The plaice can live up to 30 years, thanks in part to the lack of interest from commercial fisheries. The majority of Alaska plaice that are harvested are a byproduct of commercial fisheries targeting other groundfish, such as yellowfin sole.

The cover image is from Johnson’s Natural History. The cover font is Adobe ITC Garamond. The text font is Adobe Minion Pro; the heading font is Adobe Myriad Condensed; and the code font is Dalton Maag’s Ubuntu Mono.
