They are called functional interfaces because each of them has only one abstract method—a Single Abstract Method (SAM). They are also called functional types because they are used as method parameters (by Observable operators, for example). You have to be very familiar with them in order to avoid re-inventing the wheel and creating a custom interface while a corresponding interface is already provided with the library.
