Personally speaking, I am a huge fan of ORB. It's free and a good alternative to SIFT and SURF, which are both protected by patent laws. ORB actually works better than SURF. It's also interesting to note that Gary Bradski was one of the authors of the paper entitled ORB: An Efficient Alternative to SIFT and SURF. Can you figure out why that's interesting? Google Gary Bradski and OpenCV and you will get your answer.
