A few years ago, an entire lifetime ago, I sat at my desk, staring at the flickering cursor on the screen, trying to write. I had left midway through a PhD program in neuroscience to become a novelist, and I was stuck on the fifth draft of the great novel inside my head. It was the worst day of my life as a writer.

Curiously, it was also the first day of my journey to become an artist. But I did not know it then. Grabbing a pen and notebook, I went out for a walk.
