Stage 3. Designing Strategy

The final stage of futures work ties the future to the present through the development of a strategic roadmap that can lead you toward your future vision. This section provides some basic methods for developing a long-term roadmap and explains how to set up measurements of success across time, tasks, and deliverables. Futures work is inherently speculative to some degree and can be dismissed as a thought exercise unless you commit a strategic plan to execute on your vision or North Star.

In this stage, we’ll delve into the following:

  • Chapter 11, “Strategy”

    • Prepare for the strategy meeting or workshop

    • How to use backcasting, a method to kick-start roadmap planning

    • Short-, medium-, and long-term goal planning

    • Measuring success

      • Indicator monitoring

      • Innovation accounting

    • Implementation and delivery of the strategy

  • Chapter 12, “Integrating Futures into Your Organization”

    • How to integrate Futures Thinking into an organization from the inside (as an in-house employee) or from the outside (as a consultant)

    • How futures work can fail or succeed
