PART 2

PART 2. Creating and Activating Maps

A general process for experience mapping consists of five stages:

Initiate

Chapter 5 deals with setting up a mapping initiative. Frame the effort. Get stakeholder alignment. Decide on the right scope.

Investigate

Alignment diagrams must be grounded in evidence. Chapter 6 details techniques for research.

Illustrate

Chapter 7 covers how to visually represent the experience. This is about creating an insightful narrative, not artistic talent.

Align

Chapter 8 shows ways to use diagrams in workshops. Facilitate collaborative sensemaking. Build commitment to action.

Activate

Chapter 9 introduces frameworks for translating current state insights into future possibilities. Move from understanding to innovation.

Stages 1 through 4 result in current state maps: depictions of experiences as you observe them today. The aim is to get alignment on how your team understands the experience and what problems are worth solving.

Remember: it’s not about the map (noun), but the mapping (verb). Involve stakeholders throughout. Get their feedback on your initial proposal. Include them in the investigation. Create the diagram together. Come together for workshops. Don’t make mapping a solitary effort.

A diagram shows a cycle of activism.
