The two primary security functions provided by SSL and TLS are encryption and to verify the server is legitimate. The latter is carried out using certificates. A server certificate should be issued by a trusted third-party that verifies the company and server is indeed legitimate. Self-signed certificates are not issued by trusted third-parties, but by the organization using them.
A common set of weaknesses that we noticed during the last decade are weak cipher encryption permitted for the usability and compatibility of the browser.
