Chapter Nine. A Summary of the Model

Much new material has been presented in the previous four chapters, and it is worthwhile now to summarize the model as it has been discussed. This model, like all models, is a simplification of reality. It can, nevertheless, structure our reasoning usefully and raise provocative issues.

The Model Setup

Chapter Five began with a job that is composed of only two activities. In the situation described by Blau, for example, employment agents perform both an interview activity and a referral activity. Most jobs are more complex than this (including, no doubt, the job described in the Blau example), but explanations are easier if we keep things simple.¹
