Microsoft Fabricは、2023年のMicrosoft Buildカンファレンスでプラットフォームのパブリックプレビュー版として初めて発表された。それ以前、このプラットフォームはTridentという仮称のもと、集中的なテストとプライベートプレビューが行われていた。
これはAzure Synapse Analytics の先行開発を基盤としている。Azure Synapse Analytics は、分析ワークロードを構造化クエリ言語（SQL）サーババイナリのみの使用から、コンピューティングとストレージの分離へと移行させた Microsoft の初の大型リリースであった。
コンピューティングはSQLエンジンの基本思想を継承しつつ、全く新しいバイナリと機能を備えている。ストレージはAzure Data Lake Storageを基盤とし、あらゆるファイル形式を格納する中央集約型で柔軟なストレージシステムとして機能する。ユーザは主にオープンソースのParquetファイル形式を保存するが、CSV、JSON、XML、Microsoft Excelなどの形式（これらに限定されない）も保存可能で、コンピューティングエンジンから読み取れる。
Microsoft Fabricの初回リリースでは、プラットフォーム上のサービスにSynapseという名称が使用されていたが、最新版ではその名称は消えた。現在では、中小企業から大企業まであらゆる規模の組織向けに本格的な分析プラットフォームを構築するために必要な全てを包含する、完全に新規かつ独立したプラットフォームが提供されている。
