Virtual assistants have been around since the 1990s. One of the most notable was Microsoft’s Clippy, an animated assistant designed to offer tips and suggestions within Microsoft Office. While innovative, Clippy’s limited functionality and inability to fully understand user needs made it more frustrating than helpful. Clippy was adorable, albeit annoying, but it represented an essential step in the evolution of user support, showing a demand for automated assistance integrated into everyday software.
In the following years, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) reshaped the capabilities of virtual assistants. Apple’s Siri, introduced in 2011, was a breakthrough, allowing users to use voice commands to interact with their devices.
