Every word processor—Microsoft Word included—bases its inner workings on hidden characters and the basic principle of inheritance to copy the format applied to whatever is under the cursor to what comes next. To format its text paragraphs, Microsoft Word uses three main hidden characters:
¶ indicates an Enter key pressed in the document, used to represent the end of a text paragraph.
→ indicates a Tab key pressed in the document, used to displace the text to the next tabulation mark.
