Preface

My interests in modelling and simulation began during my period as an undergraduate and Master’s degree student at the University of Aberdeen, and developed further in industry at Ferranti Ltd (Edinburgh) where I worked on electronic and mechanical elements of inertial navigation and related aircraft systems. This was my first experience of working on highly integrated and multidisciplinary systems, although terms such as those were not in common usage then. For such design applications, issues of model accuracy were of critical importance and simulation techniques also had a central role. Interests in the application of modelling and simulation continued throughout my period of PhD study at the University of Glasgow and were further ...
