About the author

Professor David Murray-Smith was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and at the University of Aberdeen where he graduated BSc(Eng) with First Class Honours in Electrical Engineering in 1963. He continued his studies at Aberdeen University and gained the degree of MSc by research towards the end of 1964. He was then employed at Ferranti Ltd (Edinburgh), working within a group engaged on the design and development of aircraft inertial navigation systems. After a couple of years in Edinburgh, he moved to the University of Glasgow for a three-year appointment as an Assistant, a position that also allowed him to undertake a PhD degree, which he gained in 1970.
