Once completed, a modern show may consist of many terabytes of data stored and backed up on a server or collection of portable drives. While this short-term storage solution may appear cheap and easy, the long-term prospects for the survival of digital films remain in doubt. Newer films are “born digital,” meaning there are few if any original film elements.12 When a film is picked up for theatrical distribution, film elements can be created from the digital master files such as a “film-out” or digital negative and these should be considered for inclusion in the archive.
