Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a networking and transmission technology that was developed initially in 1982. It is based on an entirely new set of principles that enable such diverse traffic types as voice, data and video to efficiently share a common transmission path and switching points. It has received a lot of publicity recently and has been hailed as the panacea for all ills, providing unlimited bandwidth for all on demand — a little bit of an exaggeration.
