So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

In den Syntax-Beschreibungen für die Datentypen werden eckige Klammern [] verwendet, um optionale Teile der Syntax darzustellen. Das folgende Beispiel zeigt, wie BIGINT in diesem Kapitel erklärt wird:
BIGINT[(Darstellungsgröße)]
Das bedeutet, dass Sie BIGINT entweder allein oder mit einer Darstellungsgröße benutzen können. Die kursive Schreibweise zeigt Ihnen, dass Sie nicht Darstellungsgröße an sich, sondern stattdessen Ihren eigenen Wert eingeben müssen. BIGINT kann also beispielsweise wie folgt genutzt werden:

Viele MySQL-Datentypen unterstützen, wie der BIGINT-Typ, die Angabe einer Darstellungsgröße. Wenn nichts anderes angegeben wird, muss dieser Wert eine ganze Zahl zwischen 1 und 255 sein.
