It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

The open file cache mechanism is important, but cached information quickly becomes obsolete, especially in the case of a fast-moving filesystem. In that regard, information needs to be re-verified after a short period of time. This directive specifies the of seconds that Nginx will wait before revalidating a cache entry.
