How it works...

Our workflow in this recipe is investigatory in nature. We discovered interesting clues, followed leads, and attempted to confirm our working hypotheses until we established evidence that allowed us to define a concrete plan of action. Basically, we poked around until we got an idea. In this case we found that the use of map and reduce in our hot function (divideByAndSum) seem to be prime culprits.

We discovered this by using several techniques.

First we checked which functions were being inlined by V8 and found that our function was not being inlined (and still isn't, we'll find out how to successfully inline it in the There's More... section). We also saw what that on two occasions a call to Array wasn't being inlined, what ...
