In this chapter we examine the case of a categorical response variable. Categorical responses are types of random variables that are not measured on a numeric scale. Categorical variables may be ordered or unordered. We consider the case of unordered (except in the case of binary — where success is considered favorable to failure).
Categorical data occur commonly in practice. Demographic variables are often categorical. Outcomes in confirmatory clinical trials are often clinical outcomes; e.g., treatment response; i.e., clinically significant improvement.
