In this portion of the book, we consider the idea of fitting a mathematical model to a set of data. A mathematical model is simply an equation or set of equations that forms a mathematical representation of a particular phenomenon. We begin with a straightforward, but incredibly useful, technique called linear regression.
We will use an example to illustrate the idea. Suppose we wish to study the number of births to mothers who are 15–17-years-old in the United States. Further, we conjecture that the number of such births is related to the poverty level of a community.
