Chapter 3Profiting from useful websites
In this chapter I outline some websites you may find useful. I haven't included sites that are discussed in greater detail in later chapters; for example, online broking sites and charting sites.
Types of share investing websites
Broadly speaking, websites can be classified into three main groups:
- user-pays sites
- free sites
- hybrid sites.
User-pays sites
User-pays sites provide information or facilities accessible to paying subscribers only. This may be a program or trading system that's claimed to be superior in some way, periodic newsletters or trading advice (tips). The fee may be a once-only charge — for example, to undertake a training program — or an ongoing charge in the form of a monthly, six-monthly or annual fee, if you want to maintain your subscription. If specialist or unique share investing information or resources are available on the site, you can expect to pay a fee to access it. After all, an inventor or creator who puts time, effort and expense into creating an original product or resource that offers significant benefits is entitled to compensation from those who use it to their advantage. Accessing the resource online doesn't change this; it just makes the product or service easier to access.
Once you pay and become a subscriber (or customer), you'll most likely need a log-in code and password. Fees vary widely, from a few hundred dollars to several thousand.
