Frequently, op amps and other analog ICs require protection against destructive potentials at their input and output terminals. One basic reason behind this is that these ICs are by nature relatively fragile components. Although designed to be as robust as possible for normal signals, there are nevertheless certain application and/or handling conditions where they can see voltage transients beyond their ratings.
