Chapter 8. Managing the Oracle Data Warehouse

Any data warehouse deployed on any database supporting a large and mixed community of business users requires upfront planning to mitigate complications in management or the need for extensive custom programming later. Although it is common to focus on the number of database administrators (DBAs) required to manage a data warehouse, that number is irrelevant if the resulting deployment requires an army of programmers to make the data warehouse understandable to the business users, or if extensive modifications are needed every time business needs change. From a broad perspective, one should consider the number of people, types of skills, and flexibility needed in managing the entire infrastructure over time, including the data warehouse, any data marts deployed, and business intelligence tools.

This section of the book provides focus on managing a data warehouse deployed on the Oracle database. Administrative tools used to create and manage Oracle databases that might be deployed using a hybrid schema are discussed here, since such schema are increasingly used in deploying single, scalable, and understandable data warehouses. Of course, these same tools can be used in organizations that choose to deploy multiple data marts (usually built using a star schema) or a more traditional enterprise data warehouse that has a third normal form schema.
