3. Boot and Shutdown Procedures for SPARC and x86-Based Systems
System startup requires an understanding of the hardware and the OS functions that are required to bring the system to a running state. This chapter discusses the operations that the system must perform from the time that you turn on power to the system until you receive a system login prompt. In addition, it covers the steps required to properly shut down a system.
Because of the difference in hardware, the kernel initialization phase of the boot process differs between the SPARC and x86 platforms. This chapter describes the boot process on both the SPARC and x86 platforms as described in Figure 3-1.
