In Part III, we describe the basics of Internet multicast routing. Chapter 9, Internet Multicast Routing, provides an introduction to IP multicast forwarding. The interaction between multicast hosts and routers is covered, including IGMP. The role of a multicast router is described in detail. The difference between source-based tree and shared-tree protocols is also explained. The chapter ends with a discussion of the Internet’s multicast service, called the MBONE.
