8.1. Introduction
In all previous chapters, the major concern was to assign an unknown pattern to one of the possible classes. The problem that will accompany us throughout this chapter is of a slightly different nature. We will assume that a set of reference patterns (templates) are available to us, and we have to decide which one of these reference patterns an unknown one (the test pattern) matches best. These templates may be certain objects in a scene or can be strings of patterns, such as letters forming words in a written text or words or phrases in a spoken text.
