6General considerations
This chapter explicitly discusses two issues that are scattered around several chapters in many other books about pattern recognition. These issues would fit equally well into any other chapter of this book and would emerge in slightly different flavors depending on the surrounding context. Hence, one could discuss each of the issues on demand partially as required, but this approach would miss the point that both issues pervade the entire scope of pattern recognition.
Actually both matters are rather short and therefore this chapter will be, too. But we decided to spent an entire chapter to accommodate their fundamental importance.
