Alcohols are hydroxy derivatives of alkanes or alkyl derivatives of water with a general formula R–OH.
Alcohols are of following types:
These are alcohols with only one –OH group. Their general formula is Cn H2n + 1 OH.
They are further divided in following types:
• Primary alcohol (°) RCH2OH, for example, CH3OH methyl alcohol (Methanol).
CH2=CH–CH2OH (allyl alcohol)
• Secondary alcohol (2°) R2CHOH, for example, (CH3)2CHOH isopropyl alcohol (Propan-2-ol).
• Tertiary alcohol (3°) R3COH, for example, (CH3)3 COH tertiary butyl alcohol (2-methyl-propan-2-ol).
