Alkyl derivatives of the nitrite form are called alkyl nitrites.
Preparation
• Alkyl nitrite is prepared by adding concentrated H2SO4 to aqueous solution of sodium nitrite and alcohol.
NaNO2 + H2SO4 → NaHSO4 + HONO
ROH + HONO → RONO + H2O
For example:
NaNO2 + H2SO4 → NaHSO4 + HONO
C2H5OH + HONO → C2H5ONO + H2O
