DBAs might be forgiven for wondering what a chapter about middleware is doing in this book at all. They might initially think that the application server has nothing to do with them. However, it is a fundamental component in the PeopleSoft architecture, and it has an intimate relationship with the database. The sizing and configuration of the application server or servers can have a significant effect on the database and on the flow of work from the end user to the database, and therefore on the performance of the whole system. The DBA must at least have an appreciation of Tuxedo.
