5Applying Vacuum Tube Devices

5.1 Introduction

Numerous circuits have been developed to meet the varied needs of high-power radio frequency (RF) amplification. Designers have adapted standard vacuum tube devices to specific applications that require unique performance criteria. Most of these circuits are built upon a few basic concepts.

5.2 AM Power Amplification Systems

Class C plate modulation is the classic method of producing an amplitude modulation (AM) waveform [1]. Figure 5.1 shows the basic circuit. Triodes and tetrodes may be used as the modulator or carrier tube. Triodes offer the simplest and most common configuration.
