So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Security requirements
The minimum privilege required for SPO API access is being a SharePoint Online Global Administrator. Tenant administrators will also be able to use the API. However, it is good practice to set up a dedicated scripting account with that specific role. If the account is only going to be used for that purpose, you do not need to assign it a license:
You can assign the permission to individual accounts in the tenant administrator site.
The SharePoint Online API supports multi-factor authentication in an interactive session. However, an account with multi-factor authentication cannot be used for unattended scripting.
