Biocompatibility of precious metals for medical applications

Abstract:

This chapter will firstly look at the terminology that defines ‘biocompatibility’. It will then look at how, where, why and in what forms precious metals are used in the human body, and will look at reports in the literature that show acceptable and unacceptable biological reactions to precious metals in the body. The effect of alloying and the microstructure of precious metals (alloy preparation) on biocompatibility will also be discussed. Finally, the future of precious metals for medical applications will be debated.
