All music is subject to copyright protection unless it is in the public domain (see the next section). Unless you only intend to show your film in a classroom or hire a composer to write original music, it is absolutely necessary to clear the music you intend to use in your film. Your film cannot be exhibited publicly (including on the Internet) without a specific grant to do so. This applies to festivals as well (see further on).
