WE CAN’T SIMPLY buy PLM as a software application, although software is an integral component. This chapter will describe how people, technology, and processes/practices are all integral to a perspective of PLM. It will explore the characteristics of each of these and explain how they fit into a PLM framework. Chapter 5 will also focus on the issue of practices, which is often ignored in favor of a focus on processes.
When we reviewed definitions of PLM in Chapter 2, we saw the terms approach and system used. What are the elements that make up this approach or system? We propose that PLM is made up of people, processes/practices, and technology.1
