AS IN ALL TECHNOLOGIES, PLM is a social construction with competing views and interests. It is difficult to capture all of the salient elements in a simple definition because there currently is a lack of shared understanding and agreement. This chapter will explore the various definitions of PLM to show the dispersion of views. The chapter will then propose some visual models and explain how they show rich explanations of what PLM is and can become. In addition, the chapter will explain PLM’s relationship to the other major enterprise system, ERP.
