Application design is a hotly debated topic. Spend a little time online and you’ll find endless discussions on the subject, many ending in flame wars. In this chapter, we’ll risk getting burned and offer some guidance based on what we’ve learned building Elixir apps with Ecto over the last few years.

We’ll look at some the best practices that have emerged in the Elixir community, and see how they apply directly to Ecto. We’ll cover separating pure code from impure, organizing your applications into contexts, and navigating the benefits and challenges of working with umbrella apps.
