I might begin here by somewhat awkwardly mentioning that I have a Master's degree in math and lots of math awards, but I find some of the mathematical concepts associated with basic functional programming to be a tad slippery. One wouldn't discourage someone strong in the relevant math and computer science fields from tackling the full mathematical rigor of, for example, the foundational functional reactive programming papers linked to in the Wikipedia article on functional reactive programming.
