Understanding how networks operate is important not only when you’re assessing a target’s infrastructure but also when you’re configuring your own systems for offensive security operations. This chapter starts with a brief refresher on network fundamentals and walks you through a few sample network topologies. Then you’ll apply those concepts, specifically the notion of directionality, to configure a C2 server and implant via the Metasploit framework.
