Product Business Goals and Mission Statements

Because of the significant costs and time, organizations need to have very compelling reasons when proposing to build or redesign complex systems rather than buying them. The first thing we need to do when undertaking the development of a new system, or redesign of an old one, is to obtain or develop a concise description of these reasons. These could be characterized in a number of different ways (e.g., market intent, product roadmap, business and operational strategy).
