18.1 Introduction

Safety, health, and environmental professionals can play a significant role in the development of new Environmental Management System (EMS) models and implementation of Lean Six Sigma practices designed to minimize variation and improve productivity and sustainability efforts of an organization. In this chapter, readers will learn how Lean Six Sigma principles are combined with risk assessment tools, variation reduction and sustainability methods. In addition, new tools for ISO 14001 implementation will be provided.

Occupational health and safety (OSH) professionals continue to face the challenge of convincing management of the need to optimize safety, health and environmental (operational and hazard risks) management systems and align them with an organization’s business objectives.
